A timely check-up can make a big difference.
The Pap smear is a screening test for the prevention of cervical cancer. Its objective is to look for precancerous lesions associated with HPV.
The timing to start getting Pap smears will depend on your HPV vaccination status. Your trusted gynecologist will guide you based on your medical history and needs. Remember that, according to Law 17.242, you are entitled to one day off per year to get this test done.
Once on the gynecological examination table, your gynecologist will gently insert a speculum into the vagina to properly visualize the cervix. Then a sample is taken and sent for cytological study.
Taking the sample doesn't hurt!
The results will be ready in approximately 7 days.
